These are some of my favorite and longtime Kids on the Bridge. They are the heart of the singing corps. *Photo by Lance n Don (Facebook) . The tiny tot nearest me, who can’t be more than 4yrs old, surprised me last night by whispering the song requests to me. We are adding You are My Sunshine and Perfect World to the repertoire. They get special treatment from me because they “sing for their supper” and make it happen. For instance we send home extra dinners with them for “Mum”; or who knows who? I think there’s about 12 girls and 4 boys.
The others we feed, almost all boys who do not sing, are made to sit, wait and behave. I hope by this treatment that they will catch onto the benefits of singing. They are difficult because not only are some adolescent with hormones popping through their veins but quite a few are glue-sniffing addicts. Its a very depressing to see and they repel tourists I am sure. If they smoke a cigarette I will not feed them. But at the end of the day they are Kids on the Bridge too.
I encounter all kinds of people on The Bridge. Last night a young quite sophisticated Chinese lady and her man sat down. She spoke great English, was extremely inquisitive and did not smile (Translation: She was suspicious of me especially given that I know almost nothing about the Kids). It goes with the territory. But she thought I was a phenomenal singer and was very interested in The Kids about 20 of whom were present. They requested several songs and took video and photos. Quite a few donations were made in front of them as they sat there. Finally they stood up, thanked me, and gave me a donation of 400 Riel….. which is 10 cents. Hahaha! I thanked them and so did the children. I appreciate every dime given. So away they went. But it wasn’t the last we’d seen of them
About 20 minutes later they returned and she came right over to me carrying a substantial bag of fruit; good stuff, apples and oranges. “I want to give these to the children” she said. I am dubious of letting anyone give anything to the kids. But this was fruit. Still I said “It is better if you give them to me and I will give them to the children.” She was quite reluctant so I said “go ahead then”. She goes over and hands the bag to one of the glue-sniffing juvenile delinquents and he instantly packs it in his sack and takes off. The other Kids of course do nothing because she did after all give the bag to him. They are all left empty-handed and she open-mouthed. She turned to me astonished. I said, “Its better to give me money and I will feed them”. She gave me 20 Chinese Yuan; more than $3!
